This way, you can give an Admin role to a specific group of users, but, at the same time, limit their access to some of the devices. For example, one group only manages devices in Boston, while the other one manages devices in Amsterdam.

Which IoT platform features will make your deployment successful?

Let’s start with device connectivity. The first step in building an IoT application is getting the data that’s streaming from your edge devices to the Cloud. With WolkAbout IoT Platform, there are a few ways you can do this.

  1. We built our Platform to support industry standard IoT protocols - MQTT, CoAP and HTTP so that we can integrate with any IP and non-IP-enabled device. Open source connectivity libraries called WolkConnectors and WolkGateway are used to help connect the device to the Platform. A gateway comes useful whenever your endpoints aren’t capable of direct cloud communication.
  2. WolkAbout IoT Platform also includes interfaces to major IoT connectivity platforms so that you can connect your LoRa, Sigfox and NB-IoT devices.
  3. Finally, we can help companies connect their legacy machines and tools which are not natively Internet-enabled, like PLCs, by fitting them with a simple gateway mechanism.

Once connected to WolkAbout IoT Platform, the lifecycle of your devices scattered across the field can be centrally managed through a single application, which significantly reduces operating costs. This includes several features, like device onboarding, software deployment and firmware updates, configuration and control of managed devices, as well as real-time information on the operating status of any individual or groups of devices.

Data from the physical world come in various shapes and sizes and are stored in a range of innovative storage solutions. We use structured databases for devices, users and transactions, while event and telemetry data are stored in the high-performance key-value databases. Apart from sensors, a source of the data can be any third-party application (for example, external weather data, road conditions or commodity pricing).

Further on, our Data Semantics module enables you to visualise data both on the device level and in the context of your business case. You can define your own business logic by modelling data and creating virtual representations of real-world objects or systems.

Let’s look at the conditions inside one hotel room. The room itself can be equipped with different devices sending various data to the Platform - temperature, humidity, occupancy. But you don’t need to think in terms of devices. The Platform enables you to create a semantic group called Hotel Room #1 and map data coming from these devices to it. This way, you can monitor and control conditions in the room without even thinking about devices which are sending the data.

Users can describe their business case by creating Semantic Group hierarchies and link data and operations coming from one or many different devices at the same time, as well as by adding the physical world context through semantic attributes.

This module provides you with rich data rules and on-the-fly data format conversion. Also, if a device breaks down, or is replaced, the data is not lost - you just need to remap the semantics to a new device.

Finally, based on the business case modelled through data semantics, you can turn device data into intelligence that can be utilised across multiple systems and applications.

Importantly, our Rule engine module processes live data streams and enables triggering thousands of events, even if they happen at the same time. It informs you of any abnormal or critical situations in real time through push notification, SMS or email, so you can spot issues before they become problems. It also offers easy-to-configure rules for automated follow-up actions.

For example, you can set rules so that when a device disconnects from the network, the Platform automatically resets the connection. This will limit service downtime and any potential loss. Also, sensors can collect information about the soil moisture to tell the farmer how much to water the crops. But, you don’t actually need the farmer. Instead, the irrigation system can automatically turn on as needed, based on how much moisture is in the soil.

Of course, with our customizable dashboards, you can interactively explore and compare data in real time. You can also analyse history data through reports and integrated deep analytics tools.

Platform’s ability to integrate with other systems allows you to build a complete business environment by adding your own industry-specific components and third-party applications.
